Dedicated PostgreSQL engineers
Need a Postgres engineer for constraints, indexes, and queries that should not take a coffee break? DayDecoder hires people who design the data model with the application, not after it. Overlap hours for the US, UK, Europe and Australia. You own the migrations.
This is application-adjacent Postgres: the person who writes the migration also understands the Laravel or Python code that will hit it. It is not a night-shift DBA who never saw the domain.
PostgreSQL shows up across the public portfolio: diagnostic lab reporting, wallet-style ledgers, luxury real estate (with Next.js), AI support tools, trading backtests, IoT boards, and more. Those products need different shapes — JSONB here, strict numeric ledgers there, PostGIS-like thinking only if the domain is spatial (we will not enable every extension “because Postgres can”).
A hire on this page should be able to read EXPLAIN, add a constraint without locking the table into next week, and say no to a UUID primary key fashion when a bigserial is the honest choice. Redis remains a cache, not a hiding place for queries we refuse to fix. Our Redis article is about Laravel at scale; the same discipline applies when Postgres is the source of truth.
Normalisation where it pays, denormalisation where you measured it. Foreign keys, checks, and exclusion constraints so the app cannot save nonsense.
The slow endpoint, the report, the “it was fine until month six” list page. Indexes that match the WHERE and ORDER BY you actually run.
Expand/contract, backfills, and a plan for locks. Friday-night rewrite of production in a GUI is not a process.
PITR, connection pooling, autovacuum that is not folklore. RDS, Cloud SQL or a box you already run — we will not move you for sport.
Skills and tool stack
SQL first. Extensions second. ORMs are clients of the database, not a substitute for it.
We work in PostgreSQL 14+ as we find it, with Eloquent, SQLAlchemy or Prisma talking to it. pg_stat_statements, EXPLAIN ANALYZE, and a staging copy of production shape (anonymised) beat guessing. Logical replication, partitioning, and Citus-class tools only when the data size has earned them.
Engagement models
A growing SaaS usually wants a recurring owner for the data model. A single slow query can be hourly.

A few days a week beside Laravel or Python developers. Typical for index work, a module’s schema, and a monthly EXPLAIN clinic.
A lock, a bloated table, a migration that cannot run. Time-logged. A “quick look” that is a version upgrade will be scoped as one.
Hiring process
We need a staging copy and the queries that hurt. We do not need production superuser on day one.
Thirty minutes with the founder: engine version, size, and the pages or jobs that time out.
Dedicated, part-time or hourly, plus whether the first month is schema, performance, or backups.
A copy we can EXPLAIN against. Production credentials stay tight until the work requires them.
An index or a rewritten query with before/after. No mystery “tuning” without numbers.
What we changed, what we will not change yet, and the migration calendar — in your overlap hours.
DDL that locks a hot table belongs in a window you choose, usually off-peak for your users. We schedule those windows in overlap so someone on your side can say stop. Index builds and ANALYZE can run in India hours when they do not block writes.
If your buyers are in one region, that region’s evening is the constraint. We will not run a rewrite of a US-facing ledger at 09:00 in New York because it is convenient in Ahmedabad.
Morning updates waiting in your inbox when the US workday starts.
Same-day overlap for calls, reviews, and decisions.
Afternoon overlap with Central and Eastern European teams.
Early-morning calls that fit the Australian workday.
The database person already works with the Laravel, Python and Next.js people. Schema arguments happen in one company, not in a vendor triangle.
Migrations live in the product repo. We do not hand you a SQL file and vanish.
Ledgers, lab reporting, AI tools, trading reports, IoT. Different shapes, same refusal to treat the database as a dump.
Before/after on the query that hurt. We will not sell a hardware upgrade as the first move if an index would do.
Dumps, replicas and migrations are yours. We do not hold the only backup. NDA on request before we see production-shaped data.
