Forward deployed engineers (FDE)
Need an engineer who joins customer calls, learns how a team really works, and turns that into integrations, data pipelines or AI workflows in the product? DayDecoder hires forward deployed engineers from Ahmedabad, India for software companies and operations teams in the US, UK, Europe and Australia.
A forward deployed engineer is a software engineer whose job starts with the customer, not the backlog. They join calls, read the spreadsheets people actually use, and ship the code that closes the gap between your product and a real workflow.
Much of the work on this site has that shape. The customs inventory tracking ERP had to connect Laravel to an IBM i (AS400) DB2 system over REST and EDI, which meant understanding how a warehouse and a customs process really run. The retail ERP modernisation started with functional and technical specifications for each module, written with the retailer before any code, so a legacy system could be replaced module by module. The WhatsApp marketing SaaS and the cloud POS platform both depend on integrations with outside services that behave differently in production than in their documentation.
Software companies use forward deployed engineers to land large customers: connecting the product to the customer’s data, configuring it for their process and feeding what they learn back to the core team. Operations teams use them to automate work that no off-the-shelf tool fits. In both cases the engineer is judged on whether the people using the software get their day back, not on story points.
Connecting your product to a customer’s ERP, CRM, spreadsheets or legacy database, with logging and retries so the integration survives real data.
Moving records out of old systems with mapping documents, dry runs and reconciliation reports that the customer signs off.
LLM extraction, summaries or routing placed inside an existing process, with a human review step where a wrong answer would matter.
Written notes on what customers struggle with, plus small product changes or internal tools that remove the friction.
Skills and tool stack
An FDE needs full-stack range and judgement more than one specialist framework. We staff people who are comfortable on a customer call and in a database console on the same day.
Day to day that means Laravel, Node.js or Python on the backend, React or Vue when a screen is needed, SQL across MySQL, PostgreSQL and whatever the customer runs, and the APIs of the tools they already pay for. When AI is part of the brief, the engineer works with OpenAI or Claude through the same careful patterns described on our AI hire page. Communication is part of the skill set: clear written updates, honest estimates and the confidence to say when a request does not belong in the product.
Engagement models
Forward deployed work is usually tied to a customer rollout or an operations change. We size the engagement to that rollout and agree it in writing.
One engineer embedded with your team and your customers through onboarding and beyond. Best when you land several large customers a year or run a complex internal operation.
The same engineer for a fixed number of days each week, typically to support one or two customer rollouts alongside your core team.
A single integration, a migration dry run or a workflow audit. Time-logged, with documentation your team keeps.
Hiring process
Five steps, starting with the customer or workflow that needs the help rather than a generic job description.
Thirty minutes with the founder about your product, the customer or team the engineer would support, and what success looks like.
The person, the engagement model, the start date and how they will work with your customers and your core developers. No obligation.
NDA first if you want one. Then access to your repository, staging and the customer channels agreed with you.
The engineer joins customer or team calls, maps the workflow in writing, and ships a first small fix or integration step.
Working changes, open questions and product feedback every week, in your overlap hours.
Forward deployed work needs more live conversation than most engineering roles, so overlap is planned up front. UK and European customers get afternoon overlap from India, US teams get a late India window, and Australian customers get early-morning calls. Build time sits outside those windows, so customers see progress between calls.
Engagements are remote by default. If time on site with a customer matters, we discuss it in the proposal rather than assuming travel.
Morning updates waiting in your inbox when the US workday starts.
Same-day overlap for calls, reviews, and decisions.
Afternoon overlap with Central and Eastern European teams.
Early-morning calls that fit the Australian workday.
Our projects are full of messy integrations, legacy systems and operations workflows, which is exactly the experience forward deployed work needs.
Legacy databases, EDI, payment gateways and messaging APIs appear across the case studies on this site.
The engineer can fix the backend, add the screen and write the import script without waiting on three other people.
Written updates, honest estimates and a founder who stays involved, so your customers hear one consistent story.
Code, scripts, mappings and notes belong to you once paid for, and stay in your repositories.

A customs and inventory tracking system that connects a modern Laravel application to a retailer's IBM i (AS400) ERP, so customs, stock and movement data can be worked in a web interface instead of green screens.
