Dedicated MySQL engineers
Most of our Laravel products run on MySQL. Hire a DayDecoder engineer who will own InnoDB, indexes, and the migration that must not lock checkout. Overlap hours for the US, UK, Europe and Australia. You own the schema and the data.
This is not a generic “SQL resource”. It is the data half of the Laravel practice: the same people who have shipped bill payments, job platforms, WhatsApp SaaS and price-comparison crawlers on MySQL.
Those products are public on this site. They use MySQL for money movement, applications, campaigns and crawled prices — workloads that punish a missing index and a loose type. A hire on this page should be able to read the slow query log, add a covering index without cargo-culting ten more, and plan a migration that expands then contracts so checkout does not wait on a table copy.
We use Redis in front of MySQL on several of those apps. Cache is not a substitute for a bad query. If someone proposes to “just cache it” as the only fix for a dashboard that scans the orders table, we will push back. The Redis guide on our blog is about using the cache honestly; this page is about making MySQL earn its keep first.
Money as integers or decimals you can defend, statuses as real columns, foreign keys on. utf8mb4 because names are not ASCII.
The list page, the report, the job that locks. EXPLAIN, the slow log, and an index that matches the filter you actually ship.
Expand/contract, pt-online-schema-change or native INSTANT/INPLACE when the version allows. A 20-minute lock on orders is a product incident, not a DBA anecdote.
Dumps or snapshots you have restored on staging. A backup that has never been restored is a story.
Skills and tool stack
MySQL 8, InnoDB, and Laravel migrations as the default path into the database.
We are fluent in MySQL 8 features we actually use: window functions, CTEs, generated columns, INSTANT DDL where it is safe. We will work on 5.7 if that is what you have, with an upgrade on the proposal if 5.7 is the real risk. Hosting is RDS, Cloud SQL, PlanetScale-class, or a box you already run — we will not move you to a new vendor as a hobby.
Engagement models
A live marketplace or fintech app usually wants a recurring owner. A single index can be hourly.
Owns schema, performance and backup drills. Best when MySQL is in the critical path every day.
A few days a week beside your Laravel team: the next module’s tables, a monthly slow-log clinic, a replica that actually lags less.
A lock wait, a disk filling with binlogs, a migration that cannot finish. Time-logged. Version upgrades are projects.
Hiring process
Staging first. Production superuser later, and never in the application config.
Thirty minutes with the founder. MySQL version, size, and the endpoint that makes support unhappy.
Dedicated, part-time or hourly. If Postgres would honestly be a better home, we will say so rather than flattering MySQL.
If you cannot restore, that becomes the first ticket. We will not tune a database you cannot rebuild.
Before/after on latency or rows examined. No mystery config tweaks as the only deliverable.
Upcoming migrations, lock risk, and what we are not touching yet — in your overlap hours.
Checkout and cron jobs decide the maintenance window, not our office clock. Locking DDL is scheduled with you, usually off-peak for your customers, with someone on your side on the call. Index builds that can run as INPLACE happen in India hours when they do not block writes.
If the product is US-only, US evenings are sacred. If it is UK-heavy, we avoid UK shopping hours. We write that in the proposal so nobody is surprised.
Morning updates waiting in your inbox when the US workday starts.
Same-day overlap for calls, reviews, and decisions.
Afternoon overlap with Central and Eastern European teams.
Early-morning calls that fit the Australian workday.
MySQL is how most of our Laravel catalogue stores money, jobs and messages. You are hiring into that practice, not a separate database company.
Schema arguments happen with the people writing Eloquent. Fewer “the ORM did it” dead ends.
Bill pay, job applications, WhatsApp campaigns, crawled prices. Those are the tables we have already made boring.
Redis in front, MySQL correct underneath. We will not hide a table scan behind a 30-second cache and call it architecture.
Dumps, replicas and migrations are yours. NDA on request before we see production-shaped rows.
